4- Friday, September 16, 1994 - North Shore News West Van allows security ALARM COMPANY signs will continue to sprout up on West Vancouver properties following a West Vancouver District Council decision Monday. WEST VANCOUVER DISTRICT COUNCIL By Maureen Curtis Coun. Andy Danyliu made the motion to allow existing security system signs to remain, but to restrict them in future to certain dimensions and colors. Council had viewed the signs as a possible infraction of the munici- _ pal sign bylaw. Earlier this year alarm system owners told council that part of the value of security system was in the deterrent effect of a posted sign. Council has since looked ir, making the signs a permitted use of the bylaw, but requiring a generic format. The move is an attempt to pre- vent the proliferation of large and unsightly signs. Council also objected to the signs as convenient advertising for the various companies and the pos- sible vulnerability faced by resi- dents who don’t have signs to ward ' offrobbers. | But there were also objections to the notion of a generic sign. “Most people purchase a securi- ty system based on the reputation of the alarm company,” said ADT Knills representative Roy McGuire, on Monday. His company agrees with restricting the size of tne signs and Lions Gate sidewalks to be fixed WORK TO replace 57 sidewaik panels and nine support stringers on the Lions Gate Bridge will . begin soon. ; The announcement was made recently by Transportation and Highways Minister Jackie Pement and North Vancouver-Lonsdale MLA David Schreck. Rust in the steel beneath the concrete surface of the sidewalk has caused the panels to warp and lift out of alignment. Once this pro- ject is complete, half of the 344 panels will have been replaced. Others require replacement in the next few years. “This work is part of the min- istry’s commitment to keep the Lions Gate Bridge in a good state of repair until a decision is made on its future,” said Pernent. “These repairs will be wel- comed by the many cyclists and pedestrians who use the Lions Gate Bridge,” said Schreck. “The new sidewalk panels will greatly improve safety.” The panels will be replaced this fall with temporary fill placed between them. Permanent finishing of the gaps between the panels requires warm weather and will be completed by June 1995. Project work will be done at night to minimize inconvenience to the travelling public. During con- struction times. bridge traffic will be limited to single lane traffic in both directions. Pro Steel Erectors Ltd. of Delta submitted the lowest of three ten- ders and has been awarded a signage not allowing day-glo colors. McGuire pointed out that with eight break-ins per 1,000 residents in 1993, West Vancouver is one of the safest communities in the province to live in. Research has shown that installing an alarm system is sec- ond only to buying a dog as a deterrent to burglars, McGuire noted. The bylaw passed despite the objecting votes of councillors Alian Williams and Rod Day. Williams described how the development of West Vancouver's sign bylaw has eliminated large billboards, flashing neon lights and large gas station signs. Day said that the bylaw amend- ment merely legalizes the present situation. He was concerned about the number of false alarms that occur (about 3,000 last year). bg Right now you can get savings of galactic proportions on ali telephone purchases and SmartTouch services only from BC TEL.
