12 - Sunday, August 28, 1994 - North Shore News IMAGINE A tourist brochure for the Lower Mainland warn- ing visitors not to drink the water, Farfetched? Here in the land of milk, honey and lotus eaters? If a travel writer had happened upon us during our great chloriae/ehloramine debate, he might have thought Muniezuma took his revenge on the road. AH he would have heard about was tri- halomethanes, bacteria, watershed logging and turbidity — that and ozone being touted as the solution to all our prob- lems. Yet, for all of our preoccupation with the purity of our drinking water, how much of it is justified? We need chlorine to disinfect our water to the end of the water system, yet we don’t want the harmful byproducts that go along with it. According to a McGill University toxicologist, some trade-olTs between health and disinfection are inevitable. Despite our water’s cloudiness and sometimes chlorinous taste, it at least doesn’t have the hard mineral taste you find in the prairies. There, health risks from chlorination are far higher. Here in soft water country, the water isn’t great, but it could be worse. INQUIRING REPORTER Do you trust your tap water to be healthy and good-tasting? Heather LeFort North Vancouver No. We've installed a per- manent filter system under- neath our kitchen sink. [t's the only place we get our drinking water. Stanley Dzuba North Vancouver Yes | do. Compared to waters I've drunk in other countries and other parts of Canada, | think it’s pretty good. David Wilburn West Vancouver No. I don't think they're treating it appropriately. Sandy Dafoe North Vancouver No, because it smells and tastes a lot stronger than it used to. I’ve lived here for 20 years. I can tell the «tif- ference when I use bottled water. Amin Janmohammed Vancouver i don’t feel completely safe. I just don’t have the facts; [ don't know. 1 think if we kiew more about what's contained in our water I'd probably be more secure.
