8 - Friday, July 10, 1992 — North Shore News MAILBOX | Ferry corp. trying to be cost-efficient Dear Editor: I don’t work for nor often use B.C. Ferries, but I’ve lived on the North Shore since 1974. I've heard ail this whining before. The ferries are part of the highways system we all pay for handsomely and love to complain about. Complaints a couple of years ago resulted in the ferries not adding their usual hourly sail- ings during summer peak periods lately. That, in turn, led them to thinking about night sailings to move the traffic. How many complainers have lived in that area longer than there has been a B.C. Ferry terminal there? How did they get the money for the expensive West Van property if they weren’t smart enough to realize what sort of Horseshoe Bay ferr enterprises were already located there? If you owned a business the size of B.C. Ferries, wouldn’t you ex- pect to be allowed to manage it as effectively and efficiently as you possibly could, for best returns on investment? How many of you complaining about these ferries also complain about government costing too much, and being too inefficient, and not ‘‘business- like’? enough? Here’s a government corpora- tion trying to be cost-effective and more efficient and there you are, complaining about it. You can’t have your cake and eat it too! Ray Sutton North Vancouver protest silly exercise Dear Editor: Recently, a group of Horseshoe Bay residents tried to make a point about 24-hour sailings by picketting the traffic that was crossing the Lions Gate Bridge. From the traffic reports | heard on the radio, I gather they caused _ quite a traffic slow-down. The question I have is, why on earth would people who are trying to garner public support do some- thing so silly? Do the protesters really think that morning com- muters are going to sympathize with people who are delaying their travel time by. causing a traffic jam? In my opinion, the Horseshoe Bay folks are going about their protest the wrong way. Don’t put people out when you are trying to get their help. By standing road- side, the protesters are putting themselves in the same category as the mindless political candidates who snarl traffic ac both North Shore bridges at campaign time by waving placards and trying to look earnest.
