Festival of the Arts — the fargest event of its kind in Canada — is being held in a Lower Mainland municipality. On Wednesday, the entire area surrounding recCentre Lonsdale (at 23rd and Lonsdale) will take on a festive look and feel as cele- brations get under way, in honor of North Vancouver District’s 100th birthday. Any day now, roughly 1,500 students are expected to descend on the area, with 2,000 partici- pants in total vying for the pro- vincial title competitions in all areas of the arts. Five organizations are involved in this year’s festival, including the Assembly of B.C. Arts Coun- cils, the Association of the B.C. Drama Educators, the B.C. Association of Performing Arts Festivals, B.C. Scudent Film and Video Festival and the Pacific Coast Music Festivals Association. Included in these competitions are performances by the pro- vince’s best dancers and musi- cians, exhibitions of visual art, screening of award-winning films and videos and performances by bands and theatre groups. The festival kicks off Wednes- day night with an official opening ceremony from 4-5 p.m. Then, each day, competitions in each field will be held at various leca- tions on the North Shore — church basements, the Leo Mar- shall Centre, Capilano College, to name a few, culminating in a nightly concert at Lonsdale ice arena. To ensure the North Shore's arts community isn’t left out of the festivities, a Centennial Com- munity Showcase, drawing on purely local talent, will be held across from recCentre Lonsdale in Norseman Field. And visual art lovers, take note: there will be a 250-piece Images and Objects exhibit on display at the curling rink. The B.C. Festival of the Arts has grown steadily since its begin- nings in Kamloops in 1982: forty- three B.C. communities are taking part in this year’s event, with par- licipants ranging in age from seven to adult. It is the biggest festival to date. competitive players. Info: RecCentre Londale, 988-6166. eee May 20--Ongoing. Kindergarten Storytimes for children 4 & 5 yrs.
