Chena splashes
to success

CHENA SWIM Club of North
Vancouver gave an outstanding
performance at the 1989 Short
Course B.C. Championships in
Victoria in February.

Thanks to the efforts of Chena
and outstanding coaching by Jan
Henderson, John Melnikow and
Jedy Aspinall, Chena placed sixth
out of 3! teams, including top
teams from Edmonton and
Washington.

Once again, Chena's Catherine
Shier was the top medal winner
with a gold in the 200 fly, 800
freestyle, 400 freestyle and a silver
in 400 1.M. Schier also won a
bronze in the 200 freestyle and
fourth in 100 freestyle.

Schier was named top fernale
swimmer in the 15 to 16-year-old
category, winning the aggregate
trophy for her age group.

But Schier was not the only fi-
nalist in the team.

Thirteen team members reached
the finals out of 493 children from
B.C., Alberta and Washington.

Finalists were: Marek Hejdok
(12) with a gold in 400 1.M., Litza
Aaderson (13) with a sixth in 100
backstroke, Romin Gerela (14)
with a bronze in the 50 freestyle
and Adam Fallis (14) with a sixth
in the 100 backstroke.

Vanghn Thompson (13) placed
fourth in the 100 and 200
breaststroke, Tracy Measham
eighth in the 100 breaststroke,
Mickcile Woods (16) with a bronze
in the 200 1.M. and Pam Gray (18)
with a fourth in the 200 fly and
400 freestyle.

Elissa Purvis (17) won a silver in
the 400 and 800 freestyle, Rob
Price a bronze in 200 freestyle,
Ken McCormack (17) with a
bronze in 100 and 200 breast
stroke, and Jamie Arthor (18) with
a sixth in the 100 breaststroke.

Personal best times were achiev-
ed by Stacey Caanliffe (9), Ben
‘Wiliaws (10), Craig Carley (13),
Steve Krogeeth (14), Carlin Goos
(14) and Cezanne Goos (15).

At the Junior Provincials, Neail
Epstein, Exick Setticasi and Jasoz
Gavac achieved their personal best
times.

Cypress hosis
freestyle series

THE B.C. Cellular Freestyle Series
will be held at Cypress Bow! on
Mar. i! and 12.

Saturday will feature the moguls
competition, with individual runs
starting at 10 a.m. At 13:30 the
bumps dual siaiom will take place.

On Sunday, the competitors take
to the air for the serials portion of
the competition. Each skier has
three fly bys, and will be judged on
the best two of three jumps.

The first set of jumps begins at
10 a.m.

Both days’ events will take place
on Lower Bowen, under the
Sunrise Chairlift.
