8 ~ Wednesday, November 30, 1988 - North Shore News MAILBOX NV aldermen rebut editcrial Dear Editor: Your editorial of Oct. 30 on North Vancouver City Council’s tetreat contained some unfortunate errors of fact. Before correcting those errors, we would also like to take issue with the conclusions which were based on those same errors. ‘Ac- countability’ to the residents of North Vancouver City was in our opinion the entire objective of the retreat. This we believe was ac- complished, although it was hampered by the non-attendance of Ald. Rod Clark. Council, by participating along with staff in the process of long- range strategic planning, was able to set priorities and objectives on vital issues concerning the future direction of the city. This process by all accounts was long overdue. To call an intensive three-day planning session an ‘‘outing’’ de- means the dedication of those who participated. The staff (excluding one union member) and council volunteered their entire weekend to this process in hopes of being able to better understand the issues and challenges facing city hall over the next two years. As for the erroneous facts which were used to add weight to your conclusions on council’s lack of accountability, the following is an accurate outline: ® The vote to hold a retreat was passed unanimously on June 27. ©The inclusion of staff, in- cluding the only person to be paid Guay merchants hurt? Dear Editor: Recently I visited Lonsdale Quay and was quite shocked to find that the parking lot at the west side of the Quay was closed. This must be debilitating for Crossings. Earlier in the day, I] had phoned to Bob the Butcher and felt com- pelled to honor my order and so waited in my car, sixth in line, to enter the under-the-Quay parking. They had an attendant on duty to let you know when you could enter. I saw several cars turn away, not willing to wait, and not willing to pay. If it hadn’t been for my order with Bob I, too, would probably have pulled out and gone to Safeway or some other store where 1 could park. How much will this hurt the merchants at the Quay? J.E. Lamb North Vancouver for attending the retreat, was pass- ed unanimously on July 25. @On Aug. 22 council again passed unanimously an estimated expense report on the retreat costs. © The above votes, contrary to your article, demonstrate the unanimous support of all council members, including Rod Clark, during those meetings. ® All of the motions were made public and passed in public session of council. “They were also available to your reporter. © The total cost was $1,500 less than the amount reported in the North Shore News. © By proper council process, all council members and the press should have known that in order to ratify any decision made at the retreat, that decision would have to be dealt with at a regular coun- cil meeting.
