Women: tough economy is no excuse to quit

Why bother with “Career
Alternatives” when there are
no jobs? What’s the point of
considering the future when
finances and family pro-
blems are of real and im-
mediate concern?

The Career Alternatives
Program at Capilano Col-
lege, which for 8 years has
provided in-depth career
counselling for women, is
facing questions like this is
today’s hard economic
times, but coordinator An-
drea Kiss doesn't believe
that women should stop
looking at their options.

“Traditionally women put
their personal goals aside in
order to meet a crisis and
provide support to others in
the family,” said Kiss. “But it
is possible to do both — that

family and develop personal
option.”

First, believes Kiss,
women need to devise
strategies for coping with the
immediate pressures which

and particularly the women.
In addition, though, women
in the 1980’s have many op-
portunities to become ac-

tively involved in and con-
tribute to society.

“As a family person, a
community worker, a stu-
dent, an employee;
whichever role we play,
there are ways to participate
and affect change in socie-
ty,” said Kiss.

She is concerned that the
current economic woes
could be used as an excuse
