A24 - Wednesday, December 17. 1980 - North Shore News Air Cadets emphasize citizenshi The 103 Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron of North Vancouver (Thunderbird Squadron) is culminating an active fall program with a Christmas party on Wednes- day, December 17, joined by their officers, instructors and the sponsoring commit- tee. Over the past four months the 40 cadets, 13-18 years old, have participated in various exercises away from the headquarters at Forbes Avenue, besides the weekly training parades. The gliding and flying familiarization in the air as well as survival training in the bush put into practice what the cadets had learned in theory of flight, naviga- tion, meteorology, airman- ship and other subjects. Opportunities for pursuing special interests such as radio communication, photography, band and rifle range have also been eagerly utilized by all. Citizenship, stressed in the Air Cadet program, had not been neglected by the members of the “103D". Squadron members _par- ticipated in various com- munity parades and memorials, assisted in poppy sales and wheelchair shopp- ing for the disabled among others. This is but a small ex- pression of thanks to the community and the armed forces for the no-cost oppor- tunities presented to the cadets. It is the adult officers and instructors who organize and supervise the many = ac- tivities, giving their spare time and enthusiasm for suc- cessful squadron programs. Some of the things they have in the works are the con- tinuation of the _— fly- ing/ghding experience as well as tours of Whidby Island Naval Air Station and McCord Air Force Base in the USA. Planned for later in the spring are a tour of CFB Comox, = adventure training, and an exchange with an Otlawa Air Cadet Squadron. After the Christmas break the Wednesday training parades will resume on January 7,6309.30 pm A fund-raising bottle dnve will be conducted on the 10th and 11th of January Later in the month = officers and cadets will man booths at North Vancouver malls to explain the Ais Cadet pro gram to the public In the meantime in terested young men and women 1314 years old are invited to drop in at any training parade 1513 Forbes Avenue) for information about the program Parents also are cncouraged (oon quire personally during the parades of by phone (9X! 8414) PHOTOS FOR SALE I you want to ofder a phrote thal appeared in the NEWS, call Andrea Barratt P9oam.-5pm For kids!
