CS-Wednesda Ly CY July 9, 1980 - North Shore News women By GORDON STEWART MLS.C. There are no quick, easy ways to improve fitmess or lose weight. The following clarifications are meant to set the record straight. SPOT REDUCTION You cannot do special exercises to lose weight in certain places. Sure, situps can help firm the stomach muscles, but they won't necessarily “burn off” fat in that area. Studies suggest that reduction is most likely to occur where fat deposits are most conspicuous, regardless of the type of exercise pursued. The key, then, is expending more calories through activity than taken in food. VIBRATORS, MASSAGERS AND JIGGLY BELTS These come under the name “passive activity” and it’s easy to see that’s a contradiction in terms. The case for vibrating, jiggling or rubbing off excess fat lacks scientific evidence. You must expend the energy, a machine can't do it for you. RUBBER SUITS TO ASSIST IN WEIGHT LOSS Rubber suits can bring a temporary weight loss, but it’s not a “real” loss, merely a water loss through increased forced perspiration. This is accompanied by dehydration so fluids must be consumed to bring the body back into balance and this returns body weight loward the pre-exercise level. Furthermore, rubber suits upset the body's natural cooling mechanism, in- creasing body temperature which, if severe, can lead to heat stroke or heat exhaustion. Rubber suits for weight loss purposes are wisely avoided EXERCISE GADGETS Exercise “gadgets” are usually accompamed by claims of instantancous fitness with little effort. Most of these “gadgets” arc inexpensive, but few are effective. One problem is they're no fun. You do the activity because you know it's good for you. Why stay at home and tug on some pulleys when you could go for a walk tn the park? THE FACTS You can't buy or store fuiness It must be carned and then maintained And successful weight loss (that is. weight that comes off and stays off) lakes patience and persistence An old cxercise adage suggests that “three times a week as twice as good as twice as twee oa Weekend) gardening oF Sunday hiking ts avt cnough There's much ume between sessions and you what week” loo lose some of you Fitness and weight loss - facts and fallacies gained. A daily session of vigorous activity may be equally unwise for begin- ners. Regular, moderate exercise is the key. Every other day or three times a week is a wise way to start. Your body will appreciate the “rest” days. The most effective ap- . proach to weight loss is a reduction in caloric intake in combination with increased physical activity. (Like fewer doughnuts and more walking). Exercise will “burn off’ some calories and help in “toning” and “firming” muscles, but dietary 11,12. restriction is crucial. Remember that one pound equals 3500 calories. One mile jogged or walked consumes only about one hundred calories. Exercise can help but the secret obviously lies in learning when to push away from the table. Dismiss the fallacies, remember the facts, get started and success awaits.
