"North Vancouver City | Council has approved a . $1000 grant to the B.C. Lions Society for. Crippled - Children- for the tran- sportation | of handicapped adults “whose. residence ‘responsibility is that of the Municipality. co The | original ‘motion to provide (a grant of ap- proximately $8:per.person to a total of $600 a. ‘month until the Urban Transit: Authority _took over the service in | about . four _months, was defeated. _ The B.C.. Lions society \ requested. the grant, as they had expanded their program of providing transportation __4for handicapped children to “\include the transportation of handicapped adults. | Because of the number of adults using the service it had become necessary to utilize funds intended for the transportation of children, which the society did not want to do. There was some debate ‘was to whether it . was council’s responsibility to spend money on_ tran- sportation and also whether - the Urban Transit Authority would take oyer the service in four monthé as the society says it will. | _ For’ this reason council voted to give a lump sum grant rather than subsidize with a certain. amount of money a month. buffs are — on their own The skateboard park in the Seylynn area of Mountain ‘Highway came to North Vancouver District council's attention again when, once more, it was learned that many users were not wearing the appropriate safety gear, and ‘the question arose of providing supervision to en- sure that safety equipment is used at all times. Council learned that the similar facilities in West Vancouver and the City of Vancouver, are not super- vised. It was also learned that the municipality’s pre- sent insurance coverage fully protects the District in the event of serious accident caused by users not wearing safety equipment. In the — circumstances, council felt justified in not incurring the added costs of supervision. It is now, therefore, up to parents, guardians and indi- vidual users to ensure, in their own interests, that skaters wear the proper safety cquipment when skateboarding on the ramps and refrain from using the facility when the ramp is wet.
