The Al Rose Trio is set to play next at the restaurant at 8 p.m. on Friday Sept. 15. The trio is headed by North Vancouver jazz veter- an Al Rose on clarinet. Joining Rose are Ron Johnston on piano and attend the Westlake College of Modern Music. He remembers playing with Gordon Lighttoot in the col- lege big band. At the time, Lightfoot was a drummer and pop vocalist. The college way a pepular place for established musi- cians to visit when scouring for new talent. Rose spent some time playing tenor sax and clarinet with the Mart Kenney Orchestra. When Rose isn’t riffing on a tune he’s drilling teeth as a dentist. Says Rose, “I've always had an interest in sci- ence and an interest in the art. I did the music first and I was a professional musician for eight years.” While Rose’s main instru- ment is clarinet right now, he’s played his way through a range of saxophones, from alto to baritone. Clarinet was his first instrument, when he played in high school dance bands back in Edmonton during the 1950s.
