gig in Vancauver was in 16 97
after the release of the sepho-
more album Freak Show, The
group is back with its third
album, Neon Ballroom. Ic
strays from the band’s grunge
roots and firmly silences those
critics who slagged the band as
yet another Nirvana clone.

“The changes we made,
the directions we went, the
change from Fregstemp to
Freek Show and now Neon
Ballroom being sa dramatic
has helped us out a lor. We
just wanted a record that was
something a little bit different
from the last one, the generic
rock snow stuff. It was some-
thing that we liked ourselves.
Now the pcoyle like it, so
that’s even better.” ;
The album’s first single was
“Agthem for the Year 2000,”
a brooding, pro-youth com-
mentary. As for 2000,
Joannou says the band has no
plans for a new year’s eve gig.
At least not yet.

“I'm sure if we're going t to
be playing anywhere, it’s going
to be in Australia, we'll spend |
it with our fiends and family.”
