28 - Sunday. December 20, 1992 - North Shore News Christmas Window Christmas movies are magic fx S CHRISTMAS quickly ap- proaches (De those words make you break into a sweat?), you may be looking for a little something to get you in the mood. By Tina Gilbertson News Reporter If Reservoir Dogs and Pas- senger 57 don't quite do it for you, you may want to take a trip to the video store, where celluloid’s greatest Christmas moments can be yours to view for less than a fiver (many are on television this week). Here are some you might check out: @ Miracle on 34th Street Nominated for best picture of 1947, this charming fantasy about the mysterious identity of a suspiciously jolly man quickly became a classic. @ A Christmas Carol In this 1938 version of Charles Dickens’ tale of a crusty misanthrope, Reginald Owen stars as Scrooge. (Watch for the excellent Alastair Sim version on TV, which came out in 1951 and may also be called Scrooge.) @ ft’sa Wonderful Life Frank Capra directed and James Stewart stars (both were nominated for academy awards) in this sentimental small-town comedy drama of 1946. @ Holiday Inn Bing Crosby sang White Christmas for the first time (it won an Oscar for Best Song of 1942) in this simple but highly entertaining musical, which also stars Fred Astaire. @ Scrooge The 1970 film of this title (there were two others before it) features Albert Finney in the title role, and some inter- esting trick photography. @ Scrooged Bill Murray fans will enjoy this 1988 comedic take on the Dickens classic, in which Mur- ray plays a ruthless TV execu- tive. Some scary moments might frighten small children. e@ Die Hard In this action-adventure flick, terrorists crash an office Christmas party and Bruce Willis must save the day. Alan Rickman plays a wonderfully slick villain. @ White Christmas Another Holiday Inn, made 12 years later. Bing Crosby's buddy this time is Danny Kaye. Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen also star. e@ Falling in Love Singles will appreciate this sweet love story about a pair of strangers (Mervt Streep, Robert DeNira) whe meet in New York while buying Christmas gitts for their Spouses. @ Babes in Toyland A remake of the 1934 film featuring Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. This 1961 ver- sion has Annette Funicello, Tommy Kirk and Ray Bolger, with a couple of Laurel and Hardy impersonators, Not for the Siskel and Ebert crowd.
