Make the gift suit the father ALTHOUGH THE role of Dad has evolved considerably over the past couple of decades, Father’s Day remains a traditional celebra- tion. Every man wants to be a father — it’s part of having it all. Most dads — whether married, divorc- ed, widowed or unwed — glory in their status. Over the years, Father’s Day giving has exploded into an avalanche of goodies never even imagined when the day to honor fathers began in 1910. Gifts run the gamut from Meager to munificent, from an arts-and-crafts creation made at the daycare centre to a space-age giant-screen TV set. Traditional gifts remain about the same as always, with emphasis on the practical. Father’s Day gifts are rarely frivolous. After all, many Father’s Day gifts are inspired by mother or ¢22:.sone else who knows what Dau 2:22. And the gifts that children are steered toward are likely to be useful. The present given most often is something to wear, according to Tecent research. Apparel is the most popular gift category by a margin of over 2% to one. That includes such familiar and useful items as sport shirts and dress shirts, ties and socks, pa- jamas and swim trunks, slacks and jackets, or belts and jewelry. It’s not exotic, but very much needed. In recent years, fragrances and even men’s cosmetics have become more important in the gift spec- trum. There are upscale designer scents, and there are the popular, modestly priced aftershaves and colognes that even the younger kids can afford on modest allow- ances or earnings. Power tools for the do-it- yourself dad fall in the practical, useful category, as does barbecue equipment, which lets Dad prac- tise his grilling skills, while treating the family and friends to summer feasts. If Dad is a shutter-bug, you can consider anything from an auto-focus camera to a new lens. Or if he has some other hobby, you know best what will tickle his ‘Dad’ is not necessarily biological FATHERHOOD DESCRIBES a relationship of love, respect, guidance and support manifest between a role model male and a child, regardless of. the family connection — or lack of family connection. A father figure is most often a biological father, but more and more these days he is a step- father, uncle, grandfather, or even a close family friend who steps in to fill the void created by single parenthoed and evolving social values. Father’s Day is a day to cele- brate relationships built on trust and confidence, and most dads — biological, step, foster, or adop- tive — can take pleasure from a relationship founded on a tradi- tion as old as the beginning of history. Jt is especially important at this time to recognize both fathers and father figures on Father’s Day, because as.the Canadian family undergoes major changes, the number of biological fathers in the role of day-to-day parent continues to dwindle. A recent study found that 35% of the children born in the 1980s could expect to spend part of their childhood with a step-parent. Another study reveals that new step-families are created every day. Add to this the number of unrecorded dislocations and in- formal adoptions, and we see a nation in which the traditional family is just one of many family arrangements that are part of the fabric of our society. The important thing to remember about families is that love can exist in any kind of fami- ly, and that the dad in someone’s life may be a father, step-father, grandfather, uncle, brother, neighbor, teacher or family friend. If he’s a sportsman, take your cue from his favorite off-duty ac- tivity. That may lead you to tennis or golf balls, golf clubs or a tennis racquet, fishing tackle, softball equipment, or maybe a gift that would bolster his standing in the bowling league. Look to electronics for some- thing more unusval — from a pocket organizer to a laptop com- puter, from a pocket calculator to a portable tape player. If price is no obstacle, consider a compact disc player or a VCR. The range of possibilities is almost limitless. Your dad might appreciate something practical or something more extravagant that he wants but wouldn’t buy for himself. Make sure you consider what your dad would really tike, not just what you would Jike him to have. As long as you consider your own unique dad, your idea will be on target.
