e News GORE RO ape TE | ae EE: THIS IMPOSING home was built in 1904 for Col. Alfred St. George Hamersley, an English aristocrat, and his family, -who first settled in Van- couver in 1888. It took two years to complete, and during this time of construc- tion he and his wife Maude and their children (three sons and two daughters) would row across the inlet from their home on Hastings Street in Vancouver to this lovely wooded site on East 2nd, for weekend picnics and gatherings. Although he returned to England in 1906 to serve for eight years as a member of parliament, followed by a military career, Col. Hamersley spent 38 very active years in B.C. As chairman of Union Steam- ships in 1904, he commissioned the ferry St. George into service, transporting up to 1,000 passen- gers across Burrard Inlet between Lower Lonsdale and Vancouver. His home on East 2nd is a Stately example of turn-of-the- century architecture in a sylvan Setting. Col. Hamersley himself planted the lofty maples that are a part of the landscaping. The foundation of this home consists of cut granite blocks sup- porting 19-inch-thick walls of Poured concrete.
