Creating a

SOME SAY getting there is half the fun; you might want

to remember that the next time

traffic.

You also might want to think
about beating these same sayers
with a garden spade — just to
make the hours and inches pass by
a little quicker.

Getting there is fun only if you
make it so. Now if the guy in
front of you was showing
award-winning movies on a big-
screen T.V. mounted on his trunk,
that could be fun. You might get
to the hospital faster than getting
home, but at least you wouldn’t
be bored. .

The same thing can be said of
the paths you create in the garden.
They may be made to offer the
traveller an interesting set of
diversions or an exercise in
boredom. In the more extreme
geography of cur mountainous

areas, a poorly designed path -

could even reduce the climber to a
state of terror and/or
hopelessness. There is nothing
quite so devastating as staring up
a seemingly endless flight of
stairs. :

Here are a few pointers on

pathways. First let’s look at the
“stairway to heaven.”’

Wherever possible, change your
direction and break up the incline
with several landings. If each turn
presented the eye with no more
than four or five risers leading
from one stage to another, the
climber would be less likely to
have succumbed to exhaustion be-
fore the ascent were begun,

As in the case of the stairs
above, changing the - traveller’s
view of the garden by changing
the direction of the path can pro-
duce many benefits. Besides gain-
ing the obvious increase in inter-
est, other pluses include making
the garden appear larger than it
actually is, providing privacy by
winding paths through plantings,
offering feelings of discovery as
each turn exposes new vistas to be
visually explored.

A word of caution here: do not
get carried away. Changes of di-
rection should appear logical; the
path must not appear to wind its
way from here to there with no
apparent reason. It will look con-
trived and in all likelihood, it will
be ignored, causing your visitors
to choose their own path, with
possibly. devastating resulis.

It would make sense to wind a
-path around an obstacle such 2s a
‘tree, 2 massed planting, a mound
of earth, a sloping bank or a rock
