GVRD directors
endorse grants

THE FIRST funds allocated by the
Greater Vancouver Regional
District under its newly approved
grants policy will go to the Van-
couver Symphony (+chestra and
the Vancouver Opera Society.

GVRD directors endorsed grants
of $74,650 to the VSO and
$49,200 to the VOS for 1991. The
remaining $120,000 in the grants
fund will be retained in a ceserve
fund.

This is the first year the GVRD
has established a grants fund. All
GVRD members — 18
municipalities and three electoral
areas -- participate in the pro-
gram. While contributions are

based on property assessments, no
member contributes more than the
equivalent of 25 cents per capita.

Regional district: staff will work
with municipal cultural planners
and members of the atts com-
munity to develop crtesa for
assessing grant applications for the
199) budget.

Though guidelines ior grant eh-
gibility are still to be fully devel-
oped, they do include provisions
that an organization must be
unique in nature, serve a region-
wide audtence, be eligible tor ted-
cral and provincial government
funding and foster spin— off
organizations,
