28 — Sunday, May 12, 1991 -— North Shore News TRAVEL Cruise ships sailing now through October CRUISE SHIPS are on their way to Vancouver — 22 of them. The first arrival was May 3, when the familiar Regent Sea was expected. We’ve printed the May to July schedule here; August to October will be published in July. During May {as the various ships arrive} and October (when they leave), sailings may be er- ratic. I’ve indicated unusual sail- ings with (*) so all of the ship- watchers will be aware of odd times. For the regular runs, ships ar- rive between 7 and 8 in the morn- ing — often lined up under Lions Gate, waiting to berth. They schedule their departures around dinner time, staggered between quarter to five and about seven o'clock. On days when four huge liners are leaving (sometimes five), being very polite about the harbor is a good idea. Our old favorites are back — Princess is here with Dawn, Pacific, Fair, Island, Sky, and Star. The Sky is replacing the Sea Princess. Sun Viking, Golden Odyssey, Royal Viking Sky, Daphne, Sagafjord, Sea Goddess, Crystal Harmony, Nieuw Amsterdam, Noordain, Rotterdam, Wester- dam, Regent Sea, Regent Star, and the Universe will all be here. Last year we had a new entry — and we didn't know it! The Song of Flower arrived with no warn- ing, so she wasn’t included in the News schedule. A small ship, she usually takes about 170 passengers (200 max) and carries a big price tag. My experience with Japanese travellers is that they don’t care much for occidental food, but Les Osland, the local agent for the Song of Flower, tells me that it’s becoming the rage in Japan; ex- pect some interesting dining aboard the S of F. The newest entry in the Alaska run is the brand-new Frontier Spirit, operated by Crystal Cruises. This, too, is a small ship, but well suited to the passages and bays that larger liners cannot enter. I know the joy of a small ship — our first and only Alaska cruise was in the Prince George! it was wonderful, but we were on one of the few sailings that was trouble-free.
