Sunday, April 28, 1991 - North Shore News ~ 39 A script with a message for elders QUEEN FOR a Day? Not my Karma. But still fun to pre- tend, and the role that was laid on me was going fo be a broadening experience. There weren’t any goiden crowns, and the denouement Cartland. The Coach-and-four was in the guise of an everyday ambulance, and the glass slipper jooked more like a running-shoe. We were short a prince, too, but his many handmaidens made up for that. Ic was all done for you and Lions Gate Hospital. The hospital is celebrating this week the end of the first year of their Quick Response Program's (QRP) debut. It’s very important to them that you and I, the elders who will be its chief focus, understand its functions and how to use it to fullest advantage. To this end, we wrote a script. So that when I wakened last Wednesday week, I was Mrs. Alice Bain, widow lady aged 78, living in a walk-up west of Lons- dale, all by myself. My husband had died in Toron- to, which was why I'd come out to the coast four to five years ago to live with my son. A good thing, because he fell ill, seriously so, and I could help him until he too died. The apartment we had shared was too big and two expensive for me to maintain, and so I'd recent- ly moved into this second-floor bachelor in a convenient location. Shopping gave me the chance for a good walk, and my church was also fairly close by. I’d not met any of the other tenants yet. This morning I was to attend a guild meeting at the church hall, and it was a pleasant day so I looked forward to going on foot. Alas, | had a fall. The wrong shoes, too great an intezest in the budding trees, a ca- sual stick at the curb side and I went down like the well-known ton of bricks. On to my right nip, twisting my knee under me so that’ I cried out loud with the shocking wouldn’t cut it with Barbara Eleanor Godley THE VINTAGE YEARS pain. Had I broken something was my first fear. ¥ couldn’t think straight, and when | heard a voice near me I couldn’t respond. The owner of the voice was another guild member, lucky for me, and she crouched by me to query and comfort until I could begin to imagine how to get up. It took a lot of gritted teeth by both of us to get me into the front seat of her car, but very shortly I was on a stretcher and inside the emergency ward. It was something like the ministrations of angels. 1 was comforted and gently questioned and my poor old body was carefully explored. X-rays were taken, blood pressure was monitored, general health was discussed and current medication listed. I report a minor diabetic condi- tion, which I try to respect, and a slight heart irregularity is revealed. Now's the time for a weekend getaway to Surf Lodge, the easy- to-get-to seaside resort that's been pampering guests for forty years. Located on beautiful Gabriola Island (a 20-minute ferry ride from Nanaimo), you'll cnjoy two nights accommodation (with private bath), one dinner and two breakfasts in our romantic ocean-view restaurant for an all-inclusive For reservations & information sall 1-247-9231 or Fax 1-247-8336 SAFETY IGNITION SYSTEM & STAINLESS STEEL SEAR GRIDS x 3 TOP PORTED BURNERS * QUICK DISCONNECT * ROTIS-A-GRATE % STAINLESS STEEL LA-VA-GRATE & CERAMIC BRIQUETTES The hip is very badly bruised, and the knee suffered lacerations as well as bruising. When [ have been processed and fully documented at the nurses’ station, 1 learn that the X-rays show no fractures or disiocations, and I do not need to be hospitalized. An ambulance will take me home. How will I cope? I am_ in- troduced to the physiotherapist, Marcia Matthews, who will call on me at home this afternoon. She will help me work out my situa- tion. My own doctor will be alerted to my condition and I will see him soon as well. Social service is paged, and when Elaine comes to me she has already spent time with the doctor and the nurse and has the results of all findings. She identifies me as a candidate for the QRP and discusses with me my home arrangements — do I have to contend with stairs? Do I have a neighbor who will shop for me? Is the apartment equipped with telephone entry controls? What about the bathroom facili- ties? Have I ever used a walker? While [ am cc:i:cting myself, beginning to see my living condi- tions from this new perspective, ! am being reassured that a team nurse will be calling on me daily for the next five days. There will be no charge for these days. The nurse (there may be two at times, one in the evenings), and the physiotherapist between them will assess my progress, and their opinions wili be shared with Terry Ramsey, who is coordinator of the QRP. I must say I’m glad this was a pipe-dream, but I am also glad to know that there is available to me and to you this special service group in time of crisis. It is specifically short-term, in- tensive service designed to sort out right at the start those people who do not need to be hospitalized. It is available to anyone on the North Shore, from Deep Cove to Horseshoe Bay, who suffers a crisis that can be safely managed at home with organized aids. There is no charge to the suf- ferer for these few days of in- clusive attention. The charges start only if home-making — services should have to be set in place. Just keep well, eh? and watch your step.
