Information sessions focus on organic gardening

DURING ENVIRONMENT
Week, June 3 to June 11, the Lynn
Canyon Ecology Centre will offer
a series of information sessions on
organic gardening.

All the key principles will be
covered: composting, soil prepara-
tion, plant selection, and alter-

World and Beeswax Works will be
giving a hands-on talk about insect
ecology on Sunday, June 4 at 2
p.m.

The highlight of the week will be
two tours through organic gardens.
On Saturday, June 10 at 2-p.m.,
Barbara Willington will be opening

her award-winning garden to the
public.

Willington won the 1986 Award
of Excellence in the North Shore
Garden Contest and she uses no
pesticides or herbicides.

The other organic garden tour
will be on Sunday, June 11 at 2

Garden Contest.

Both tours are open to adults
only and require pre-registration.

with bending and stooping to
plant, prune and putter comes
lower back pain.

' Health experts advise that this
not be so, and offer these tips on
prevention:

throughout the year. Swimming is
especially good because it loosens
and strengthens back muscles and
decreases lower back pain.

Other tips for pain-free garden-
ing: get long-handled trowels,
weeders and bulb planters that .

ing ground covers or low-lying
plants, try to squat or kneel, cush-
ioning your knees.

When moving a heavy wheelbar-
row, always push, not pull, the
load — it’s easier on your back.

And don’t forget the basics of
back care. Never bend over to pick
up something. Squat down with
your legs apart, pull the object
close to your body and grasp it.
Then stand slowly, keeping your
back straight. :

‘Tyler has been delivering North Shore News papers in the |
Edgemont area for nearly a year. He delivers 115 papers on
Wednesdays. Tyler attends the French Immersion program at
Cleveland Elementary School and is in grade 4. His favourite
subjects are Math, Art and Science. When not attending
