Automark program battles
rising thefts from

THEFT FROM vehicles continues to be an increasingly
popular pastime for thieves in North Vancouver.

North Vancouver RCMP re-
corded a 16 per cent increase last
year over the 1987 total number of
thefts from vehicles reported to
police. For 1987, the detachment’s
statistics show a total 2,522
reported thefts from both the city
and district. The figure rose to
2,926 last year.

In the City of North Vancouver
police posted 1,059 reports of theft
valued at less than $1,000 and 59
reports of theft over $1,000 in
1987. But last year in the city there
were 1,287 thefts from vehicles in-
volving losses of less than $1,000
reported to police and 70 reported
thefts over $1,000.

Meanwhile in the district, there
were 1,307 reported thefts from
vehicles valued at less than $1,000
during 1987 and 97 thefts over
$1,000. During 1988, the numbers
climbed to 1,437 reported thefts of
less than $1,000 and 132 thefts
from vehicles valued at more than
$1,000.

valuables, such as CD and cassette
sound systems, radios and cellular
telephones are popular items for
smash and grab thieves. Police
suggest such items be engraved
with a driver’s licence number. The
small engraving makes it more dif-
ficult for criminals to sell off
stolen goods.
