ACCORDING TO the Canada Mortgage and
Housing Corporation’s (CMHC) latest survey,
rental vacancy rates are lower in B.C., to an
average 2.2 per cent in October 1987.

This is its lowest level pared to

Kelowna’s annual rent in-
crease is 3.6 per cent and
Victoria's is 2.7 per cent for

five centres in a one-bedroom apartment.

cent vacancy rate. .

300 per cent. In the 10 mon-

ket rental starts in urban

centres of B.C. total 1,399. .

units. This compares to 289
units in the same Period last
year.

Vacancy rates are uneven
across B.C. The lowest rate
is in the Victoria Census
Metropolitan Arca at 0.3 per
cent and the highest rate is
44.1 per cent in Kitimat.
Some of the smaller,
resource-dependent centres
continue to have a surplus of
rental units, though im-
provements are evident. For
example, Powell River's
vacancy rate was 9.8 per cent
in October 1986 and is now
0.8 per cent.

RATES UNEVEN

Average monthly rents are
stable overall. The average
rent for a one-bedroom
apartment is $412 in October
1987 for all 28 centres. One
year ago this was $410."
