MINIMUM $100 fines now apply
for selected serious motor vehicle
offences.

Amendmenis to the Motor
Vehicle Act, passed in July,
established a new offence of ‘‘ex-
cessive speeding’’ defined as driv-
ing in excess of 40 km/hr over the
posted speed limit, and established
a minimum $100 fine for the of-
fence.

Also covered by the minimum
$100 fine are two careless driving
offences: driving without due care
and attention, and driving without

teasonable consideration for other
persons using the highway.

In cases where a person is con-
victed of speeding, he cr she will
continue to have penalty points re-
corded against his or her driver's
record, which may result in pro-
hibition from driving.

A conviction for excessive
speeding, however, will attract a
fine as well as three penalty points.

These fines represent the first
step in a government-wide cam-
paign to improve traffic safety.
