21 - Sunday, March 22, 1987 - North Shore News BOXING CHALLENGE TURNOUT ‘AMAZING’ uckskin Gloves proves to be pounding success THE TOTEM Athletic Boxing Club’s (TAC) revival of the Buckskin Gloves competition March 14 was an overwhelming success as an estimated 500 boxing fans cheered on 18 bouts at the William Lucas Continuing Education Centre. TAC coach and Buckskin Gloves organizer Mel Nahanee said the turnout was ‘‘amazing. | was afraid we might lose money on this whole thing, but we broke even. It was a fantastic night of boxing. It's something that hasn’t been done for a quarter of a century.” Main event winners included Dean acid Stanley Wolfchild from the Blackfoot reserve in Alberta, who won the best footwork and most scientific boxer awards res,-sctively and TAC’s Les Nahanee and Dale Berring of the Squamish Boxing Club took the best bout award in a battle that had Berring winning a close decision over Nahanee. Berring also won the Junior Buckskin Boy Award for his overall skill and ability. TAC's David Cranmer was voted the Buckskin Boy of °87 over runner-up David Sabena of the North Shore Boxing Club. Both men won bronze medals at the recent B.C. Winter Games. The Squamish Indian Band officially revived the TAC June 1 in an attempt to rekindle boxing glories won during the ’50s and ’60s when club boxers com- peted in national golden, emerald and diamond glove competitions.
