Van toy shop shes come true IN NORTH Vancouver there is a toy shop where Christmas wishes come true. By STEPHEN BARRINGTON News Reporter Unlike Santa’s famous toy shop where elves labor continuously, this toy shop is more of a4 store — one providing free toys to the needy to make Christmas a bit more merry. ; Operating out of a donated store, North Vancouver Christmas Bureau's Toyshop is a place where needy parents can come to select toys for Christmas morning. “The gifts we give out are new or near-new toys,’’ explained NVCB head Ida Paddock. And parents can select more than one toy to give to their children, “because all kids get more than ‘one toy at Christmas.”’ The NVCB gets a list of poten- tial Toyshop ‘customers’ from the Ministry of Social Sevices and Housing and then makes private appointments with peopie. Paddock said the typical Toyshop ‘customer’ is a_ single mother with two or three children. “We are trying to service the poorest of poor children.’” When they arrive at the Toyshop, they are waited on by the volunteer staff. if the children come along, a staff member will mind the tykes while mom shops. It is just like a real shop, said Paddock. ‘‘They do everything but pay.” Providing toys for children up to the age of 14 years, the Toyshop carries dolls, bikes, skates and games among its large collection of playthings. As well, parents can choose clothes for their children. ‘‘We've got knitted sweaters that are just gorgeous,’’ Paddock said. ‘‘All the sweaters are new.”’ Last year, the Toyshop gave out thousands of toys to over 1,400 families. Five years ago, 350 families used the Toyshop. By 1986 the number tripled. year than we’ve ever had in the history of the Christmas Bureau,”’ said Paddock. With five volunteers it is a lot of work. Being a charitable organization,. the bureau must rely on donations to stock the Toyshop shelves. So far, Paddock has received few corporate donations. “Any corporations on the North Shore see themselves as a Lower Mainland corporation,’’ she said. But Fisher-Price did donate 30 new plush toys. Most of the support comes from local small business and communi- ty groups. One group helping the Toyshop all year is the Highlands United Church women. ie NEWS photo Stuart Davis “Not only do they earn the money to buy the materials, but they make things all year and deliver them and then come and work in the store,’’ said Paddock. “They’ve done a_ tremendous job — they’re a fantastic group of a compeny or group cannot help financially, it can donate time. Last year, a group of men from a local company dressed up as elves to deliver toys. Donations of toys may be drop- ped off at any of the Christmas Bureau Food Drive depots, mark- ed by the colorful News banners, window screamers or posters.
