34 ~- Wednesday, June 26, 1985 - North Shore News ackpacking BC NOW isS the time for young people between 13 and 16 to have an unforgettable outdoor experience in remote wilder- ness country this summer. The Canadian Forestry Association of B.C. is offer- ing three adventurous week- long back-pack trips on the West Coast Trail, in Garibaldi Park and in Manning Park & Cascade Wilderness Area. They include forest studies, ecology and environmental studies. The first trip will be on the West Coast Trail in Pacific Rim National Park on Van- couver Island from July 28 to August 3. This adventurous journey begins on the Cape Beale Peninsula near Bam- field, south to the Nitinat River, then by bozt on Nitinat Lake, ending at Wardroper FABULOUS "SAVINGS! Creek Wilderness Campsite on Lake Cowichan. This is a new route, with new trails, with ocean and lake vistas. The second trip from August 11 to 17 is in Garibaldi Park. This journey takes one into spectacular alpine coun- try on the south side of the “Big One’? (Mt. Garibaldi), past turquoise lakes, around an extinct volcano and across a huge moraine to the base camp at Mamquam Lake. Just to the east is Pyramid Moun- tain with its vast glaciers. The scenery glimpsed during this week will be remembered for a lifetime. The third trip from August 25 to 31 is in Manning Park and the Cascade Wilderness Area. This journey is for those _ ‘who wish to experience the thrill of high country hiking, through the most scenic flowering meadows — une- qualied anywhere in B.C. Starting at Pine Woods Lodge in Manning Park, Heather Trail extends north-west to Nicomen Lake, then through true wilderness country to Hope Pass, ending at Whip- saw Creek on the Hope- Princeton Highway near Princeton. Applicants, both boys and girls, should be in good physical condition and able to carry a 35 Ib. pack for about 6 miles a day.
