EXERCISE WITH CARE Take caution with fitness craze By STEVE BAREHAM AEROBICS, jazzercise, jog- ging, tennis, cycling, skiung The hat of physical activities is becoming endless as Cana: dians strive tor car- diorespiratory = fitness and bodies-beautiful at a pace which borders on the phobic Indeed moderation ts out of the question for those who style their self image in the ultra-toned reflections of some contemporary models. But, can the average person achieve ‘‘the look’’ of these professional exercisers, oF was 94-year-old) Chauncey Depew onto something when he remarked: **! get my exer- cise acting as a pallbearer to my friends who exercise’’? Inthe view of Lynne Cove, supervisor of fitness for the recreation department at Simon Fraser University, many people should consider Depew’s wry remark. STOPWATCH RACER Cove, a resident of ‘North Vancouver, 1S a prime exam- ple of someone who discovered fitness late tn life ‘*Forty was approaching and | was living a typical seden- tary lifestyle. One day 1 realized | couldn't walk up a hill without puffing; | started jogging. Within weeks I was trying to beat the stopwatch for faster tmes The pain almost killed me It was ob- vious something was wrong.”' That experrence caused Cove to look seriously at a proper excercise regimen She enrolled in kinesiology courses at SFU in 1978 and three years tater found herself developing campus fitness programs tor the department of recreation “bitness awareness has done incredible things for people but exercise approach- ed improperly may leave a person with a traction war- drobe to match their stylish dacron bodysuit 7’ INDIVIDUAL LEVELS Cove stresses that she as not develling blanket oritrorsm woother systems Of rastrins byevtn The pot Po owash te make is that plystoal fitness doesn to pust Thapypen you have to know what te de ate often this requires capert ad vice taiforead for vou. the on dividual batye crercise classes where people of many different titness levels become a@ Homage nous ways tollowine a leader Chroupgh ic wow MICROWAVE dozens of formula moves can be damaging physically and harmful to one’s self-image it you can’t match the skill and intensity of others ino better condition."" This concern for the in- dividual, “high touch instead of high tech’’ was the guiding principle behind a course ot studies for instructors developed by Cove. The prin- ciple is also evident at SFU exercise classes which now run 39 hours a week and serve more than 1,700 students, faculty, staff and members of the general public. The cost tO participants, $30 per semester for an unhmited number of classes, has been sufficient to keep the fitness program largely financially self-sufficient; a bargain in Cove’s opinion because she believes the university has one of the best instructor training programs in existence. (Given the im- pact of financial cutbacks the fee may have to be increased in the near future.) FITNESS LEADERS ‘““We accept about 20 peo- ple each semester who are in- terested in becoming fitness leaders, with priority given to people who hold or are registered in kinesiology's health-fitness certificate studies.
