Dutch rinses off Soap in Danger Bay

TV VIEWERS know him best as the lovable con-
vict Dutch on the satirical Soap, Mr. Chancellor
from the Young and Restless, or Judge Grogan

from Hill St. Blues.

In his own eyes, 47-year-
old Donnelly Rhodes is a
working actor who happens
to have diverse acting oppor-
tunities continually, and fi-
nally, coming his way.

“And in 1964, I went back

there (to the U.S.) So I had
the permanent residency and
all that stuff. And it’s very
difficult for actors to get
that. You can’t really have a
career unless you can go

away from home and come

back. I’m a Canadian citizen

and an American citizen.’’
His most popular role to

to some of his most memo-
rable roles to date. It also
helped carry him through the
early years of acting when,
after appearing in a 1956 Air
Force production in the
Dominion Drama _ Festival,
he became involved with
Theatre 77 in Winnipeg.

In 1960, Rhodes was
chosen as a member of the
imaugural group at the Na-
uiopal Theatre School of
Canada in Montreal that
Yook him to Stratford for a
summer season.

‘“‘We were billeted in sev-
eral little places. 1 lived with
two of my fellow students in
a condemned building. We
put cardboard on the walls
and on the floor, and stuck a
mattress down and that was
where we slept at night. We
put paper on it to make it
look nice,”” he says.

Rhodes says at the time,
the group did not realize it
was making history as
Canada’s first home-grown,
trained actors. ‘‘We_ were
told that we were very fortu-
nate in one sense and that we
were going to get to know
each other and our teachers
