B6 - Sunday, June 24, 1984 - Nurth Shore News GERRY AND THE PACEMAKERS Viersey sound comes to Plaza GERRY MARSDEN, the man who has been through three sets of Pacemakers in twenty five years, is nowhere near giving up the rock and roll life or the touring lifestyle that goes with it. The ‘Gerry’ of Gerry and the Pacemakers, and only remaining original member, says he’s having too much fun, and watching him on Stage it’s not hard to believe. “‘] didn’t intend staying on By NANCY WEATHERLEY the road this long, but I love it. ‘‘Audiences don't change, they’re all kids from 17 to 99. I'd pack it in if it became a battie.”” Opening night Wednesday, Marsden’s only battle seemed to be stopping the applause so he could get on with the next” song. Marsden looks a bit like a musical anachronism on stage: a middle aged man, with receeding hair and middle age spread, playing electric guitar surrounded by much younger band members. But his voice sounds almost exactly the same as it always has. The band plays the hits you'd expect, Ferry Cross the Mersey, Don’t Let the Sun Catch You Crying, I Like It, | Like It, You’ll Never Walk Alone, as well as hits by artists ranging from Chuck Berry to Carole King. According to Marsden, Gerry and the Pacemakers started out in Liverpool in the late ‘50s strictly for fun. **We'd never made a penny, neither had the Beatles,. the band just kept us out of prison.’’ Then Love Me Do and Please Please Me were released by the Beatles. **‘Suddenly 47 billion bands started playing in Liver- pool.’’ Marsden admits he wouldn't have been as suc- cessful had it not been for the Beatles. ‘‘They opened the door. Before the Beatles nobody ever came to Liverpool for bands, they went to London.”’ overlooki See page B7 NEWS photo Stuart Davis GERRY MARSDEN gives the audience a litthe romance in one of the quieter moments of the Gerry and the Pacemakers show at Plazazz. 4 @ e @ e @ e ® Welcome to the Lynnwood Inn z Coffee Shop aT RRR ery OUR $6°° MOVIEMATE OFFER IS WINNING US SOME VERY BIG FANS We tnavite you and your family to expenence Our Quality Service and reasonable PHCeS Arye wee tier bee aabene camer angegee cae te Nee pee kage Deane BO VS get came case Nbars caressa, re cre pede aves tev aenee CN gataas ope aa coneguen Pe a cn hol Dr nIY Es Aad cc a Dap ot geerpn oe A aanins bas path Fev ba mae cet ae Deg saves ay 1 Monday — Thursday Dave Montgomery ~ with Suzanne Dittrich June 19 to July 14 Open Weekends 7am - 7 pm t NAL 4740 Capiiano Ad WwW Vancouver 88S 1602 ‘ ' ‘'WIGES NO MEMBERSHIP FEE The Lynnwood Inn 1515 Barrow St. Voarecoeatia Kionot Restaurant ane | cape Lueaday to oaturday A 40 pete | OO an Movie-Buff Special , e 3 Movies for 499: “he Mon-Thurs | 0©0000000600080006000080600600 [Osevrvet trary 9 OW prte Tl Oo pm Reservations recommended by calling 684 4141
