Ao - Wednesday, June 20, 1984 - North Shore News Pe editorial page NEWS VIEWPOINT Victorias duty egardiess of whether the bus drivers and the Metro Transit Operating Company call the present transit shut- down 4a strike or a lockout, neither side should over-estimate the patience of the travelling public. Up to 200,000 people daily are suffering delays and/or significant extra expense getting to and from work. Another 100,000 or so off-peak bus users face similar pro- blems in moving any distance from home -- including senior citizens, doctors’ patients and job-seekers, often without a car and unable to afford taxis. Stores and restaurants are reporting alarming drops in business. And for good measure the height of the tourist season is nearly upon us. During the ‘‘UnStrike’’ the bus drivers won some public sympathy by claiming their dispute was a fight against proposed service cuts. In theory, these certainly seem to make little sense if the transit objective is to reduce the operating deficit by encouraging in- creased ridership -- although, in fairness to the MOTC, it must be remembered that service levels are dictated by the provincial authority, B.C. Transit. Meanwhile, part- time drivers for rush hours (an MOTC proposal the union is also fighting) make obvious economic sense. As the shutdown drags on, however, these points are likely to be of less and less interest to the thousands of stranded riders. Central to the dispute now’ is the denial by the union of management’s right to manage what is clearly an essential service. Victoria’s equally clear duty is to get the buses running again without further delay pending ar- bitration of the conflict. Smartening up here’s alarm in Japan because the kids can't master chopsticks and are settling for forks. Three-month $80 chopstick courses are being offered in a bid to stop the trend which, it's feared, may mean Japanese are losing the nimble, quick-witted qualities that give them a competitive edge over other nations. In that case, maybe we should take away OUR kids’ Japanese calculators and make them learn the multiplication Cables again. ampere loplay Adverlising voOU UD11 north shore Classitied Advertising 986 6222 news Newsroom 985 2131 : : Circulation 986 1337 SUNDAY WEDNEEDAY FRIDAY Subscriptions 980 2707 1139 Lonsdale Ave North Vancouver 6 V/M 2H4 Publisher fete yet Associate Publishor Voter!
