MOLOKAI - the “friendly island” lives up to its name. The people are delightfully friendly and give tourists a warm welcome. I wish I could say I liked Molokai. We stayed at the Pau- Hana (translated from the Hawaiian, it means “stop work"). The units are .adequate, cledn, cheap and right on the beach. Un- fortunately, behind a _ reef, meaning shallow, muddy and quiet. It's unsuitable for swimming. The Pau Hana is located on the south coast, just a few blocks from the tiny city center. It has a restaurant and a large bar- entertainment area where a . Hawaiian group plays fairly good music every night. Toa half-dozen people. You can get an adequate breakfast for $1.50, lunch for two for under $8 and dinner. If I could ever get to like dehydrated potatoes and bottled salad dressing, I might learn to like the dinners. We drove over (about 25 miles from the town) and spent the morning having a look and talking to some of the guests. The reports were very favorable. If you're planning a visit to ¢ Molokai here’s my “helpful hints”: 1. Bither stay at the Sheraton or get a place with a kitchen. 2. Grocery stores are cheaper than on the other islands. They close at six. So do all the other shops. 3. There is n0 public transportation so a car is a must unless you stay at the Sheraton and plan to spend all your time there. No, I didn't ride a mule. It would have cost us nearly $100 Canadian for a two- hour down and a two-hour up visit to the leper colony. I don’t think I want to get to know any mule thdt well.
