LONG LIVE THE CARI: The automobile 1s a hard breed.
and it will survive all those doom-and-gloomers.

“IT don't believe that the private car is doomed in the 1980's,
as some people predict.” said Ford president Philip Caldwell.

“I am always amused by those people who want to do
without the motor car. Go to the rest of the world where they
don’t have cars - and what do they want most? A car. I believe
that feeling is also very strong in all of us.

“The car is here to stay for the foreseeable future ”

THINK SMALL... BUT NOT TOO SMALL: Down-sizing is
certainly on Hs way, but pocket-size cars really aren't too
realisuc, as this carton ilustrates so well. Some of the ideas
you see might be fun but they are just as umpractical as this
one.

As always, there is a happy compromise between the two
extremes - too large and too small.

HOPPING INTO THE SPACE AGE: Volkswagen
engineers are said to be working on a three-cylinder engine for
the Rabbit and a new generation of instrument panels
featuring LED displays and talking computers. They are
probably looking at the on-board computer already available
in Lincoms, Continentals and Cougars for ideas. You're
welcome. fellows.

BRONCO, YOU'RE A BEAUTY: Wher Ford makes its
cars and trucks available to the media to test drive, you might
think the company ts taking a bit of a chance After all. while
Ford hopes the reporters will like what they drive, if they don't
the resulting publicity won't exactly be helpful.

I've just received a 40-page collection of press reports on
the 1980 Ford products and | guess the company knew tts
products would stand the tests of the often cntical media
people. Judging trom what they wrote. the media were indeed
umpressed. I'd hike to share with you what one chap wrote
about the 1980 Bronco, and his report typifies the theme
which runs through all the reports.

“I'll admit it,” wrote Paui Irish. “I normally drive an Austin
Mini and the size of the new 1980 Ford Bronco initially un-
nerved me. Elevated high off the ground with large wheels and
a cavern-like cab. I was sure my week of test-driving the
vehicle would be comparable to negotiating a Sherman tank
or at best a small transport truck ~

“T couldn't have been more wrong ~

“City driving. mncluding parking and lane changing. was
executed with hquid motion | was sure the transition from the
pocket-size mint to the Ford would be disastrous. but 1
conquered the size barnmer within a short, 15-minute stint
behind the wheel Within half an hour I was ploughing
through a rocky and muddy construction site ~

“As well as being a good city vehicle. the powerful four
wheel dnve of the Bronco makes it the perfect mode of
transportation for country ving or recreanon With the
abuhty to scale steep hills and scemingly jump over streams,
the Bronco sometumes reminded me of a= well-known
superhero The standard twin-traction beam and independent
suspension made head-ons with curbs almost unnoticeable ~

Insh was unpressed by many other Bronco features, too
