You might not agree, but taking a test drive in one of the new ’93 Votkswagen Golfs or Jettas should convince you that their character differs fundamentally from either the American or Japanese cars — though the differences seem to get less and iess ali the time. The new-for-’93 Volkswagen duals have become quieter, smoother, and more refined (in effect, move like the Japanese products}, but they still retain that unique German feel which em- phasizes tight, responsive steering, higher cornering capability, and unshakable rigid structure. Having won a number of awards — including Car of the Year in Europe and in Canada — the all-new '93 Golf is expected to pull some weight around here with improved aerodynamics, perfor- mance, interior controls, and crashworthiness. But before we talk too much about the new Golf, let’s start with the origin of the Golf, when it used to be calied the Rabbit. Remember the good old Rabbit? it Gebuted as a practical yet fun car to drive back in 1975, offering both three-door and five-door hatchback beady styles. As one of the new front-wheel-drive cars available in this market segment, the functional Rabbit sold very well, . The 1975 Rabbit was 180 mm (7.5 in.) shorter and 250 kg (550 Ibs.) lighter than today’s Golf — not a huge difference really. In 1977 the fuel-injected engine was introduced, with increased power output to 76 hp. The Rabbit, with a price tag of about $5,000, sprinted to 60 mph (97 km/h) in just over 13 seconds. The year 1979 marked the first time Volkswagen started produc- ing Rabbits in the United States, though the plant was closed years later.
