Bob and I — you remember, the real rad mover with the dimple in his chin; we met at Sally’s New Year’s Eve tumble, where you got stinko on Sal’s homemade grape and threw up on the cheese tray — well, Bob asks me during our dinner out what I think about Meech Lake, and I says, all sweet and nice, that Pd never ben there, but if he’d like to go there this summer, it’s okay with me. Well, Bob started to laugh, and when I asked him why, he laughed even louder, I felt really angry and stupid then, like when Sally told me why you were all laughing at my colored balloon (I didn’t know they made those ‘‘things”’ in colors!!!). But | shut up and said nothing so he wouldn’t think I was a dork. Anyhow, I heard Bob say something to this bad waiter (he was the baddest!) about the Meech Lake Chords, so I got to thinking maybe this was a new rap group, aad since I know you're wired up on all that, you could tell me. So, how's about it? Love yah forever, Shirl. April, 1990 Dear Beity: Hi Betts! So, howsit going, kiddo? Everythings five and 10 with me. But I’ve been busy. I’m also upset. ] had lunch with a couple of friends from work, and they were telling me how this Meech Lake Accord thing attacks women, and maybe threatens to take away our rights, and stuff like that. Well, anyway, that made me really angry. We women have all got to stick together on this, Mother. A group of us are getting this petition together, so I was wondering if you would Your loving daughter, Shirley. June, 1990 Dear Daddy: 1 hope there are no stains on this paper, as I have been crying while I write. Daddy, I’m scared. Really scared. The Prime Minister says Canada is going to die if we don’t pass the Meech Lake Accord. The newspapers and the TV all say the same thing, that his coun- try is going to blow up and fall apart, so it must be true, or they wouldn’t say and print those awful things, would they? Oh, well. It’s the thought that counts, right? Right!! 9 ~ Wednesday, June 27, 1990 - North Shore News Parents call for a high school on Caulfeild Piateau CAULFEILD PLATEAU should be the site of a new secondary school, several parents told the West Vancouver School District 45 fuard at a recent public meeting. By PATRICK RAYNARD Contributing Writer Trustees plan to address the Caulfeild issue and other issues in school superintendent Doug Piayer’s Facilities for the Future report in a vote next Sept. 25, having held three weil-attended public meetings this spring and received numerous letters from parent groups on the report. But the June 18 board meeting was dominated by the issue of a new secondary school on a !3-acre site District 45 owns across the street from the Cauifeild Village shopping centre. Jill Mingay, in a lengthy pres- entation, said that 90 per cent of her Caulfeild Parents’ Group want to see a secondary school on the site, along with a community rec- reation facility. “It makes no sense to have three high schools within one mile of each other in the central part of the district when the growth is in the west,’’ Mingay told the board. “Parents want after-school ac- tivities for their teens that are closer to their homes,’’ she added, emphasizing that ‘‘a lot of people have moved into the (Caulfeild) area on the understanding that a high schoo! would be built there.” Both Trustees Michael Smith and Barbara Howard told the parents that the issue of com- munity recreation facilities adja- cent to a secondary school on the Cloverdale Paint SALE DATES: JUNE 15-JULY 8 Shop Early for Best Selection! Said Howard: ‘tht is a matter of joint discussion between the board and the municipality,’ and ‘‘! don’t think you should expect any immediate solutions.” Smith, who lives in Gleneagies, said the ‘‘political reality’’ is that nothing will change until citizens in the western half of the municipality start to make their voices heard effectively at district council, Smith pointed out that property taxes in the western part of West Vancouver are in many cases far higher than in the east, but that westerners don’t even have a sidewalk along their major traffic artery, Marine Drive, making the road highly dangerous for pedes- trians. Kathleen Matthews told the trustees that 100 per cent of her Gleneagles Parents’ Group sup- ported the building of a secondary school on the Caulfeild site. Matthews, who speaks frequent- ly at board meetings, has been saying for several years that the both the school board and municipality should spend tax monies wherever they are geographically collected. At the June 18 meeting, Mat- thews said that just because parents wanted community facili- ties attached to a school at Caulfeild, they should not have to plead their entire case before district council. She told trustees that the initia- tive should come from the schooi board and that it was the trustees’ duty to take up the fight on behalf of students and their parents. interior Flat Latex 03760 PAINTS INTERIORVEXTERIOR Semi Gloss Oil, Flat Oil or Acrylic Latex | Eaosrel 4 992 | Latex Best Buy INTERIOA/EXTERIOR Summer lines of Kidlids, Lemur, Flying Colours, Pickles and Elen Henderson 40% O off All TOYS & SHOES LOOT BAG BONANZA 1-1864 West 1st Ave. (near the aread Garden at Burrard) 737-7844 Open ‘till 9 p.m. Wed., Thurs. & Fri.
