Over 300 of the extreme
cyclists gathered atop Grouse
Mountain on Saturday for the

beginning leg of a series of

evclo-eross races,

to a one-mile circuit of dirt.
pavement, steep runs and off
camber turns and negotiated a
number of obstacles in’ two
timed races.

Ruedi Schneider of Roberts
Creek: took first spot in’ the
men’s A race, followed closely
by Vancouver's Andrew Kyle
and Carter Hovey of Victoria.

Local athletes alsa tested

Brad Issel taking, fifth: Terry

Cyclo-cross got its start in
Europe over 75) years ago
when cyclists training ins the
offseason got bored of the
asphalt and took to the hills for
more of a challenge.

“They'd take theie bikes
out onto these trails and trees
would be fallen over or they'd
come to a river and thev'd
have to quickly dismount and
rum over these obstacles: and
quickly mount up the bike
again and take off,” said Dave
Howells, Grouse’s adventure
co-ordinator.

The Saturday event was the
first in a series of three races.
The next two will be held this
Saturday and on the 27th.

Tt marks the firse time that
Grouse — or the North Shore,
for that matter — has hosted an
official cyelo-cross event.

One of the best aspects of
cyclo-cross, said Howells, is
thar it affords spectators an
excellent vantage point to view

the race.

“The lap times are benween
four and six minutes. You can
almost position yourself in a
couple of parts of the course
and you can” see the entire
