Author returns to Washington in new work @ East of the Mountains by David Guterson, Harcourt Brace & Company 279 pp, $36.00. David Guterson scored big with his first novel, Snow Falling On Cedars, a courtroom drama fraught with racial tension centred around an island community in Washington State. The book sold three million copies in the U.S. alone and won the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction. It has been translated into 20 Jan- guages, and a film version is set for release this autumn. With East of the Mountains, Guterson moves forward in time and to the arid farmiand of Eastern Washington, unfurling the life. story of dying doctor Ben Givens as he journeys towards his birthplace with the intention of committing suicide. Guterson uses the same poctic, lyrical language here as he did in Sow Falling on Cedars: “After Rachel died, the killing had become a substitute life, and he had taken up again the pastimes of his childhood — shoot- ing small birds in canyons and sa agelands, deceiving geese from cold-pit blinds, killing mallards in the bends of sloughs.” Though this book lacks the dramatic tension that so -enamoured many readers of mn novel a journey of the Snow Falling on Cedars, there is a deeply human story behind Guterson’s densely layered descriptions of place. Ultimately, East of the Mountains represents a journey of the mind, as well as a physical voyage. It is both a love story and a reaf- firmation of life, as Ben rec- olleets his own history and recognizes his own unique “role in the universe. — Katharine Hamer EH All the Dead Lie Down by Mary Willis Walker, Doubleday, New York, 308 pages, $29.95.
