TIGHT LINES IT LOOKS as if all the doom, gloom, and finger pointing regarding the missing sockeye has Jed to a little bit of good news. The public attention and hard questions being asked of fisheries officials seems to have led to some increases in enhancement projects, including some which deal with . 66 The big news is that the winter chinook are already in Howe Sound. 99 habitat improvement. It is unfortunate, however, that it takes a major catastrophe to what should have been a bumper sockeye tun in order to net the attention of the politicians. Let's hope some good comes of it before our fishery ends up like Atlantic Canada’s. With respect to the current fish- ing opportunities, the chums were still off the Fraser River as of late October. Purple hootchios are the accepted colour for chums (also try blue, black, or army truck hootchies), but herring strip works well also. The big news is that the winter chinook are already in Howe Sound. The traditional start for this fish- ery used to be in late November or early December. Lust year they began to show up in October, and it happened again this year. There even seems to be more around than Isst year at this time, and | found the winter of 93/94 to be extremely productive. I hope this trend continues, and this winter is even better. Personally, over the last five winters, I have found this fishery to be getting better and better, and I attribute at least some of this suc- cess to enhancement projects. During the last week of October, approximately 25% of the fish } landed had clipped adipose fins (hatchery fish), including two of the largest (12 and 15 Ibs). In fact, a near tyee (29.5 Ibs) | landed in January *93 was a hatchery fish as well. This proves to me that these projects work and should possibly even be expanded. Traditional winter chinook fish- ing locations ure the areas to try, including: the gap (Gibsons), Grace Islands, Tunstall Bay, Hutt Island, Halkett Point, Point Atkinson, or in Vancouver Harbor near the Bell Buoy. a Uf you need any information on booking a charter with David, or have questions about our local fish- ing, call: 980-7907, TNH hite TLE SIN SME RESTS SARE, NEWS photo Paui MeGrath FOUR MEMBERS of the NorWesters Track & Fleid Club were..|.. awarded Junior Devotopment Awards for 1994 from-B.C. : Athletics at a recent swards banquet at the North Shore Winter Club.
