By Const. Jamie Gibson Contributing Writer Being a father of three small children myself, I know the anguish parents feel regarding the fear of abduction. Since we can't always be with our children 24 hours a day, we must teach them how to be strect smart. Parents can take positive action to protect their children and help them learn how to react in threatening situations. Here are a few things you can do to help your child become street smart: @ walk your neighborhood with your children. The term “stranger” suggests a concept that children do not always understand. It can mislead children into belicving that they should only be wary of individuals who have an unusual or slovenly appearance. Child molesters and abductors can be average-looking people and can come from all walks of life. It is more appropriate to teach children to respond to certain situations, rather than certain kinds of indi- viduals. Develop a plan of action with your child on how to react in cer- tain situations. Playing a “what if” game with your child goes a long way in developing these plans of action. Give your child a “what if" sit- uation, Listen carefully to the response. Ask them why they would respond in that manner. It may lead to another “what if” question or it could reveal an area of concern. With school starting this week, there is no better time to start teaching children to be street smart. Parents may also wish to check with a local library for videos and articles on this subject. : SELECT MODELS | Syieline RANGES # 5 YEARS FREE BURNER ff REPLACEMENT (Ask tor details) o “sek tar L310 Blg-city prices with small-town attention to service at your authorized Maytag Sales, Parts & Red Carpet Service store:
