Beth Alber, a Toronto artist and
silversmith, came up with the win-
ning design. Her entry was select-
ed from 98 entries and three final-
ists in the national competition.

Entitled Marker of Change, it
consists of 14 granite benches
placed in a circle 89 feet in diame-
ter. Each bench has the name of
one of the women murdered at
Montreal's L* Ecole Polytechnique
on Dec. 6, 1989. inscribed into the
