made by North Shore resident John
Lakes. who claimed the ads should
not be paid with taxpayers’ dollars.

' “The problem is that it’s a parti-
san political column. The Reform
Party or Ted White himself should
pay for it, not Laxpayers.” said
Lakes. ; ;

Lakes said White “has made
snide. remarks” about Liberals in
the piece.

He said 60% of White's con-
stituents did not vote Reform and
don’t want to pay for political state-
ments from a Reform Party mem-

But said White, “There is a cost
to democracy and people need to
get information about what their
MP is doing.” :

But according to the House of
Commons comptroller’s office,
White's ads are allowed. They meet
the criteria of the manual of
allowances and services which was
revised in April, 1993,

White said he is able to afford
the paid columns with savings
gained by not paying his wife who
works full-time in the constituency
office.

“Her work is donated and

the work she does means I can save

White.

Collins questioned whether
White's wife was taking away a
full-time job from someone.
