You went to the docks, signed on with a ship for Hawaii or wherever, hung your hammock, and waited for the paim trees to come into view. By David Wishart Contributing Writer Getting around today is a little more complicated — what with visas, work permits and unions — but it has never been easier to see the world as a cruise passenger. There are vessels catering to every taste, going down to Australia and up the Amazon. It’s the fastest-growing segment of the travel industry, continually fuelled by the new and luxurious vessels whose owners strive for fresh itineraries, and in turn, more passengers. Not everybody is aware that all cruises — even ships departing for Alaska from Vancouver -~ are priced in U.S. dollars. It seems simple, but be sure you have the right itinerary. Travellers in love with the sea and ships will prefer an ocean crossing to a Caribbean cruise, where it’s all stop, go and shop- ping. Hf you like to eat, take a barge cruise in France. If you want to dance, step out on a big band sailing. And if you want to party, there's a frantic - flotilla awaiting. For the quieter, life, pertiaps Society expects DONATE YOUR feet to charity on Sunday, March -28 by par- ticipating in. Vancouver’s second ‘annual Super Cities Waik for - Multiple Sclerosis. The walk begins at the Plaza of Nations (on the old Expo site) winds its way through historic Gastown, then longer cruises and very definitely luxury, there are elegant vessels like Sagafjord or Cunard Sea Goddess. Princess Cruises and Royal Car- ibbean Cruise Lines feature Las Vegas-style shows, large casinos and discos. They deliver a high standard of service and food, with meals serv- ed at two sittings. For single-siting meals there is the new Radisson Diamond, which has one of the most elegant dining rooms afloat, plus sophisticated menus including pasta and Orien- tal choices, . Cabins vary tremendously. Rule Number One for singles is to go with a friend; otherwise you will pay a substantial single supple- ment or have to share with a stranger. Secondly, expensive cabins are often located) on upper decks where you are more liable to feel the effects of rolling in heavy seas. Old seadogs know that the best cabins are halfway down and midship. : Passengers who opt for a cheaper cabin, perhaps on the in- side, can console themselves with the thought that they won’t be spending much time there, and as the ships are one class only, they are treated the same as the big spenders in suites. One exception is the QE2, where passengers in the more ex- pensive accommodation have the 2,000 for walk continues back to the Plaza via Stanley Park and the seawall. Supporters are encouraged to participate as individual walkers, “sole: mates,’? whereby you have two friends join up with you, or on a challenge team with some very tempting prizes to be award- ed for the pledge-driven annual fundraiser. In addition Multiple Sclerosis Society — still needs volunteers to assist with the event, and supporters to sponsor walkers. call For more information 437-3244. to walkers, the. privilege of dining in the elegant Queens or Princess grills. Don't waste too much time on the passenger comment form. What began as an honest at- tempt to evaluate the performance of a ship's crew and staff has become a faice, with waiters on some ships telling passengers they will lose their jobs if they don’t get top ratings in the comment forms. It's not unknown for hotel managers of ships to go through the forms and throw the bad reviews overboard. Qne Vancouver docter doing a stint at sea was called into the cuptain’s office to be told that the ship’s hospital had got a high mark in the passenger comment forms. But the captain, apparently obsessed with what his overall scorecard would look like back at head office, couldn't resist adding that the laundry had received a higher score. “That’s fine,"’ said the doctor, “in future I'll send the patients to the laundry.”” Dee sl SHA ALE Both fodges located in Whistler Village proper.
