By Maureen Curtis Contributing Writer Although West Vancouver has been at the forefront in promoting the installation of sprinklers in new homes, West Vancouver Fire Chief Colin Evans said it was im- portant to continue to emphasize the need for bylaws that require sprinkler installation. “*The record for fires in Canada is the second worst in the indus- trial “world. We're just lucky we haven't lost a life in this com- munity since 1987,°’ said Evans. He underlined the problems associated with fighting fires in West Vancouver where the struc- tures are often large and can be located in difficult terrain. “‘Sprinklering gives us the ob- vious benefit of saving life and saving property — as well as im- proving safety for firefighters,’’ said Evans. The undeveloped areas above the Upper Levels Highway are of particular concern to the fire department, in part because of the increased distance from fire- fighting facilities. Esplanade g (across from Waterfront Park) a a ce WEST VANCOUVER DISTRICT COUNCIL “In the winter, when there is o snowfall, abandoned cars will block many of the roads,"’ said Evans. He showed a film that com- pared fires in two identical rooms: one that was saved because of a sprinkler and one without a sprinkler that was completely destroyed in minutes. While builders are often reluc- tant to go to the expense of in- stalling sprinklers, the film argued that the cost was slight compared with the costs of fighting a fire in a building that had no sprinkler system. “We believe that this is the most important bylaw we have ever put before you,”’ said Evans. Ted McLean, a private consul- tant to British Pacific Properties Lid., said that while he has volun- tarily participated in having sprinklers installed in the com- pany’s buildings, he was curious about the record of fire safety in sprinklered homes, “‘We have not yet had a fire in a sprinklered home in West Van- couver,’’ said Evans, although he noted that a fire at Park Royal Shopping Centre had been put out by sprinklers before the fire department had arrived. According to Evans, there has never been a life lost in a home fitted. with a quick-response sprinkler. actory| *199.
