Nissan Motor Co. Lid. says it has developed a new system able to slash battery recharging time by four-fifths, compared to conven- tional rechargers. it can restore conventional nickel-cadmium batteries to 40- per-cent capacity in barely six ininutes. And it can do the same for lead-acid batteries in barely 12 minutes. Namao Irie, general manager of Nissan's vehicle research laborato- Ty, says the company has been working to develop a fast-charge battery system for several years. He explains: “Nissan has iong considered electric vehicles the most promising type of alternative power source vehicle and has ex- pended substantial resources for development since the 1960s, long before environmental protection became a global concern. “Conventional technologies have enabled the development of as, mir conditioning. cruise contrel, leather interior, transmission, sound, power windows seats, year Warranty and muc h, electric electric vehicles that are capable of traveling short distances on one charge. A lengthy battery recharg- ing time, however, restricts prac- tical use because it limits driving range. To solve this problem and assure broad acceptance of electric vehicles, our task was to develop high-performance batteries with shorter recharging time. “Nissan's new battery recharg- ing system, which was developed in cooperation with Japan Storage Bauery, requires considerably less time for recharging than existing systems, eliminating the major stumbling block in conventional vehicle technology. The new system is therefore a signifi- cant step toward the realization of practical clectric vehicles,’’ said Irie. Nissan's new system can also recharge a battery using ordinary household current, though this requires more time. Added Iric, **We are currently developing a prototype car that uses the new system, and we in- tend to continue efforts to come out with practical, marketable electric vehicles.”’ Stk, #91-5080 This classic 4X4 gives you ali comforts such automatic premium audio * locks.
