36 — Sunday, April 7, 1991 —- North Shore News Hotel favors From page 35 that in) Hawaii all open to the public. Certainly Ritz-Carlton has built the hotel so sympathetically that from the beach all you can see are glimpses ot low, beige buildings behind palm trees. In fact the two residential blocks are six storeys tall, but cleverly landscaped be- tween a central core. At night when it is softly lit the whole place is like a maharajah’s palace, aithough happily Ritz- Carlton did not scatter a few cle- phants around the garden ia line with the now tiresome fantasy routine at other island hotels. But no, Ritz-Carlton has done it beaches are TRAVEL a house-party atmosphere all in good taste. It is, as someone said, like a rich grandmother’s house, And while some guests might become a little tired of hearing “It’s my pleasure,’’ which the staff are trained to say at every turn, itis not a stuffy horel. Only one restaurant out of four requires a jacket, and the Cafe, which is a cut above your usual hotel coffee shop, does Asian food that is genuinely tasty. The cry ‘‘anyone for tennis?’ always gets an answer from the obliging crew at the tennis centre. There are 11 courts, clinics and round-robins daily and if there’s still no one to hit with pro Nancy Hunter will step in herself . The house-party flavor is much in evidence on the Club floor, where a concierge introduces guests {0 one another in their communal living room. Food is served here all day — a delicious breakfast, light lunch, afternoon tea with scones, jam and fresh cream, then hors d’oeuvres followed by brandy and chocolates. “‘I’s like being on a cruise,” said a Calgary doctor’s wife. Fresh flowers such as pink an- theriums, orchids and proteas ecorate the hotel dailv. it’s a lovely world, if you can get through the front door.
