By Surj Rattan News Reporter While the basic academic pro- grams such as English, sciences and mathematics continue to be the main focus of the North Van- couver-based post secondary education institution, a variety of hew courses are now being taught during the evenings, which are a far cry from the norm. They inctude everything from food safety courses to a program that will take you to Baja, California, next year to catch a glimpse of a solar eclipse. Bill Van Luven and Lynn Jest are program development co- ordinators for Capilano College's extension programs and_ services department. Van Luven says the extension programs are primarily designed to give people a chance to try something new that they may have been thinking about doing for quite some time. “We often deal with people who want to get a taste of writing that novel or are thinking along the lines of career changes,”’ says Van Luven. Eaton Centre Cap College courses offer more than the three R’s the unique courses being offered are the result of people asking for certain programs. “We have the freedom to de- velop anything for the North Shore clientele,’ says Jest. “If a business phones me and says they need a course on telephone tech- niques, I'll try and find someone to teach it.” While the courses in the exten- sion programs and _ services department are unique, the in- structors are just as unique. Crystal Deshaies teaches an art Program called Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. And while the course and Deshaies are unique, her definition of the course is equally as unique. “Its an entertaining, yet sound grounding in realistic drawing.
