14 - Friday, Sune t, 1990 - North Shore News Stop, drop, roll when clothes catch on fire THE DISTRICT of North Van- couver Fire Department knows you are always careful about fire, but Hort Tips North Vancouver District Fire Department what if, in spite of your caution, your clothing caught fire? Or what if you were with someone else whose clothing began to burn? What would you do? Unfortunately, the natural reac- tion seems to be to try to run away from the fire but that won't work and running will add more air to the fire and make it burn faster and hotter. . Three simple words can save your life: stop, drop, roll. If your clothing starts to burn, stop where you are — don’t run, even if it seems to make sense. Don’t try to run outside or towards water, just stop im- mediately and drop to the ground. The flames will naturally burn upwards and, if you remain stand- ing, the flames will severely burn your face. Roll back and forth on the ground covering your face with your hands. The rolling will smother the flames between you and the ground. If you are helping someone else whose clothing is on fire keep them from doing the wrong thing. If they run, tackle them to the ground, Roll them back and forth if they don’t know what to do. Use a heavy blanket, coat or water if handy. Hundreds of real-life miracles have happened when someone — even a child — who knew what to do, saved the life of someone — even an adult — who didn’t. If clothing catches fire, don’t follow the impulse to run away. Instead, stop, drop and roll until the fire stops, then immediately call for medical help. For further information, please call the District of North Van- couver Fire Department non- emergency number at 980-7575 or your local fire department.
