1988 - 36 - Sunday, November 6, B.C. looks at jobs in space program WITH THE 2!st century just around the corner, it’s encouraging to know that over 2,000 jobs in the British Columbia economy are directly involved in the Canadian and international space programs and that figure will climb dramatically in the next few years. Canada’s federul government is expected to commit over 2.3 billion dollars to Canadian and interna- tional space programs between now and the year 2000. Frank Oberle, Minister of State for Science and Technology, has pledged that at least 10 per cent of that amount (5230 million) will be spent here in British Columbia. B.C.'s Minister Responsible for Science and Technology, the Hon. Stanley B. Hagen, recently an- nounced that the Science Council of British Columbia will sponsor a one day forum, Opportunities in Space: For Science and Industry in British Columbia. Slated for Van- couver's Canada Place, the November 24 event is intended to increase industry's awareness of the potential the space program provides for developing technology and spin-off benefits. The forum wiil provide a focus on the tremendous economic op- portunities which the space pro- gram offers to B.C. industry and science, Speakers will present both fed- eral and provincial overviews of the space program. In addition, a key representative of the U.S. gov- ernment will be on hand to address the forum on emerging private sec- tor initiatives in the space pro- gram. Several B.C. firms, such as MacDonald-Dettwiler & Associates, and Microtel Pacific Research, are already major con- tributors to the Canadian Space Program and many other British Columbia companies are presently working directly or indirectly on space related projects.
