SPORTS Local rowers cruise into spring season ELEVEN NORTH Shore athletes arc among members of the Univer- sity of B.C. Thanderbirds rowing crew heading into the strenuous part of the season. Local rowers Sharon Moore, Kirsten Andrews, Barbara Harvey, Theresa Koshure, Pat Johnston, Bruce Gailey, Steve Kitt, Paul Rogers, Ross McLean, Martha McMahon, Laura Morrison and the rest of the UBC crew finished off the winter season showing an excellent ability to win tough races. The Varsity lightweight and heavyweight men and women as well as novice men and women competed in the Vancouver Row- ing Club Fall Invitational, the Head of the Gorge and Elk Lake Fall Regattas in Victoria and the Head of the Lake Regatta at the University of Washington. The heavy competition from the University of Victoria Vikings and various crews from the states SIX-SPEED TRANSMISSION tested the rowers. ‘The strength and ability we had developed through the season produced more than a handful of first place finishes for the crews,'* said focal rower Rogers. UBC started the spring scason with its annual Row-a-thon in False Creek Feb. 6 and included all UBC rowers along with crews of alumni and invited guests. The crew starts its racing this term at Shawnigan Lake Feb. 28 and continues throughout March at Elk Lake, Oregon State Univer- sity, Burnaby Lake and ends April 2 in San Dicgo. The San Diego Crew Classic will be the toughest challenge met by UBC rowers, and will see varsity lightweight men and varsity women compete against some of the best crews from across the United States. “Hopefully, the training we are doing naw will show in victory throughout the season,"’ said Rogers.
