Sports — CFL pros to direct GSL football camp B.C, LION Bruce Barnett and Ottawa Roughrider Peiter Vandenbos will be coaching at the May 8 to 10 Gordon Sturtridge Football League’s 1987 bantam spring camp scheduled to be held at Delbrook Park. For the second consecutive year, 60 boys aged 13, 14 and 15 will take advantage of the full-contact pro- gram that is designed to help improve game skills and basic fundamentals. Vandenbos, a five-year pro offensive lineman and long-snap specialist, will lead the camp. He graduated from North Vancouver’s Windsor high school and -played on the 1982 Vanier Cup Champion UBC Thunderbirds. Barnett will be back for his second year at the GSL Midget Argos start season WITH spring football camp set to kick off May 1, the Vancouver Metro Football League (VMFL) North Shore Midget Argo coaching staff is quietly confident of success in the upcoming football _ Season. : “We've certainly got the ingre- dients to go a long way,” said coach Cy Hoffman. “The team has the speed where we need it, and good size on the line,’ Hoffman said. ‘We are still looking for players to fill a - few gaps, but the backfield is as "i good as any in the league. The May 1, 2 and 3 camp features a wide variety of guest .§ coaches, including Dan Razovitch from the Montreal Alouettes, The Argos represent the entire North Shore in the VMFL which encompasses the entire Lower Mainland and parts of Vancouver Island. . The league’s midget division is for boys 16 to 17, Players interested in trying out “for the Argo team are invited to drop by Delbrook Park (Delbrook and Queens} any Tuesday or Thursday between 7:30 and 9 p.m. The Argos also‘hold an open practice every Thursday at 5:30 p.m., again at Delbrook Park. camp. A Handsworth high school graduate, Barnett has played with the B.C. Lions for the last two years. In addition to the five certified level LI] coaches who make up the camp staff, third-year SFU linebacker Jim Gusa will be demonstrating defensive technique. Camp registration takes place April 27 and 29, May 4 and 6 at the Delbrook Field House located on the northwest corner of Queens Road and Delbrook Avenue. Players will require pants and shoes. All other equipment is supplied. A limited number of rental football pants are available.
