New. York, the endearing
family musical, based on
Charles Shultz’s famous
Peanuts comic strip, has
won praise from both critics
and audiences alike across
North America.

The play is set in ‘‘an
average day in the life of
Charlie Brown”, the lov-
able, roundheaded loser who
exists in all of us. It is a day
made up of little moments

picked from the life of
Charlie Brown.

The storyline itself is
classic Peanuts stuff, the
underlying message being
that, in spite of the. various
people and problems pres-
ented by life, what we're all
looking for is, in essence,
happiness and self-worth.
Put into the delightful
openness and simplicity of
early childhood, this
message rings especially true.

The musical is being pres-
ented by the North Shore
Theatre Society and is a
production of the Greater
Vancouver Operatic Society.

Proceeds from the concert
will go to the North Shore
Theatre Society fundraising
campaign for the Centennial
Theatre Expansion Project.

THERE'S a simple
procedure that may
save women from
surgery or even death.

It’s the breast — self-ex-
amination (BSE) that women
are encouraged to perform
monthly.

BSE can help women
detect changes or lumps in
the breast that may indicate
cancer, And although most
women know about BSE,
not all women perform it.
And those who do may not
be doing it properly.

Examination Kit, designed
to teach women the correct
method of BSE.

‘The kit, which he
prepared with help from
Beverley Ballantyne, is
available at Shoppers Drug
Mart stores for $19.95.

Neidhardt calls it a
multi-media kit. It includes a
motivational tape with in-
structions on the proper
techniques needed, a booklet
describing how. to examine
breasts, a chart to. record
how often the exam is done
and what was found, a decal
to act.as a reminder, a slip-
on. chemise to put on to
systematically examine the
breasts and a model to teach
a woman how to palpate her

breasts properly.

Neidhardt stresses the im-
portance of proper palpation
when doing the exam: and
the kit describes two. dif-
ferent ways to palpate.

PALPATION

Neidhardt, as a. practi-
tioner of preventive medi-
cine, says part of his job is
to teach people to take pro-
per care of themselves, This
is where the idea for the kit
came in..

“Women don’t know how
to examine themselves, even
if they say they do,” he says.

It’s important for women
to learn. how healthy breasts
feel in order to detect
changes, Neidhardt says.
